The classic love song ¡°Strangers In The Night¡± was made popular by Frank Sinatra in the 1960s. The mid-century lounge staple and epitome of smooth easy listening is now the featured tune of a new high-end luxury timepiece by Swiss watch maker Ulysse Nardin. No stranger to musical watches, past Ulysse Nardin watches have been given names like ¡°Sonata.¡± Nevertheless, actually putting a classic-style music box player in a wrist watch is rare. Ulysse Nardin is among a small handful of watch makers with music-box style watches. The idea being that a pin and roller style music box is inserted into the movement of a traditional mechanical wrist watch. For the Stranger timepiece, Ulysse Nardin actually redesigned the roller of the traditional music box into a disc. An attractive series of gongs (which Ulysse Nardin calls ¡°blades¡±) extend over the disc and produce notes when ¡°plucked¡± by the pins on the disc. The system is not only attractive and clever, but is also uniquely designed to fit on the relatively flat surface of a watch dial and movement.luoqiyin666
The Stranger watch is technically called a ¡°sonnerie.¡± This is a form of musical watch that plays some type of chime at specified intervals ¨C often on the hour. The Stranger watch can be set to play the Strangers In The Night melody at the top of each hour, or on demand. An arrange of function indicators supplement the music disc and time display on the dial. There is also a date window. I¡¯ve never before seen a musical watch of this type, and it does not surprise me to see it from Ulysse Nardin. Since the brand¡¯s resurgence in the 1990s, they have become the high-end watch maker of unpredictable, and sometimes whimsical things. Inside of the Stranger watch is a Ulysse Nardin produced mechanical caliber UN-690 automatic movement with a 48 hour power reserve. A high-end piece, the Stranger will be offered in a 45mm wide case in 18k rose gold. There won¡¯t be that many of them either. Watches like the Stranger are often technically challenging, proof-of-concept pieces for an elite group of collectors. And I suppose those who also really like Strangers In The Night. Ulysse Nardin will produce just 99 pieces of the Stranger with a price of $112,000 each. For more information, please visit mini music box
