Ematic Redefines The Budget Tablet With A $79.99 Device Budget tablets aren’t exactly a brand new concept with devices such as the Nexus 7, Galaxy Tab 7.0, Kindle Fire, ASUS MeMo Pad and Acer ICONIA some of the more prominent devices amongst the sea of cheap 7 inch tablets. These devices combine decent hardware specifications in a form factor that proves ideal for most users for media consumption without breaking the bank. The popularity of these devices is evident with their growing market share and how they forced Apple’s hand by making them create the smaller, cheaper iPad Mini when Steve Jobs proclaimed these devices to be ‘dead on arrival’. With all these devices at rock bottom prices; with the cheapest usable ones being around $150, it’s hard to see how firms can make one cheaper without compromising performance. There have been examples of some sub $100 devices, but these are nothing more than a glorified eBook reader with terrible resistive touch screens, out-of-date software and sluggish performance at best. Well Ematic, an experienced cheap tablet manufacturer with products such as the FunTab have taken a shot at making a decent tablet below the magical $100 mark. The new $79.99 tablet is aptly named the Genesis Prime features as you would expect some entry-level hardware with: 1.1 GHz CPU with 512 MB of RAM and a dedicated GPU 7 inch 800×480 resolution capacitive multi-touch display 4 GB of inbuilt internal storage with microSD support up to 32 GB 0.3 megapixel front facing camera Obviously this device can’t hope to compete with devices such as the Nexus 7, but considering the price, it isn’t meant to. The Genesis Prime is intended for media consumption, light gaming and web browsing. Unlike other extremely cheap tablets this device will be running a relatively recent release of Android, 4.1 Jelly Bean, which should help with performance thanks to Project Butter as well as full access to Google and Play Store applications. The major advantage this device has over other devices in this price bracket is the capacitive touch screen, which is a lot more responsive than a resistive one since you don’t need to press down hard to get the device to even register your finger. Add to the low price is the wide range of colours, as you can see from the picture above there is no shortage of colour options for this tablet. While it might not be breaking any records when it comes to performance, the Ematic Genesis Prime proves that a usable device can be made and sold for a price below $100. With a full access to Google services I am extremely interested to see how successful this device will become because at this price point it is perfect for any parent wishing to buy a tablet for their children or someone that wants one to complement their daily lives.
