Pile Jam and Supply Seat Assessment

Friday, March 29th, 2013

I’d first want to thank all the people at Mountain Jam for letting people who could not be there, for one reason or still another, the power to experience Mountain Jam from the convenience of our very own homes via the internet. The grade of the broadcast was fantastic! Hill Jam is on Hunter Mountain one of the rolling green Catskill mountains in upstate Nyc. Rolling Stone Magazine has named Mountain Jam one of the most effective 8 festivals in the country and this years’, the 7th, did not disappoint. The event involves the two main phases, the East Stage and the West Stage, that are situated alongside one another, so that the music rotates non-stop, without any over-lapping. An internal stage and the Awareness Village are also included. The understanding Village attributes an Music Stage, Kids’ Entertainment Area with music and interactive enjoyment, a beer and wine backyard, not-for-profit exhibitor platforms as well as efficiency and statue art.The celebration basically started Thursday morning, but also for this review we shall focus on Saturday and Sunday.12:30 East Stage – Ryan Montblaeau proved to be a fantastic early work beginning at 12:30. Ryan, a Massachusetts Indigenous and his group brought some clean audio funk.1:15 West Stage – Zach Deputy, self-described “Island infused Drum ‘deborah Bass Gospel Ninja Soul” display left no one guessing. He is the good time one man band. Sitting behind several microphones with his, dark framed glasses, entire mustache, truckers design baseball hat and brown t-shirt he implanted the crowd with some early afternoon power. Zach pulled out a funky Magic Carpet Ride into James Browns’ Sex Machine into Parliament Funkadelic’s (Tear the Roof off/ We Wish the Funk) that will make George Clinton proud. The group answered with yells of “one more song.” The very first encore at 2:00 PM – the beginning of an excellent day.2:15 East Stage – Mavis Staples and her direct three piece band (drums, bass, guitar) plus three back ground singers opened with some beautiful gospel band, all dressed up in dark the band quickly went in To The Weight – can anyone do The Weight like she can anymore? After giving homage to The Band she went into her hottest discharge, produced by Wilco’s Jeff Tweedy. After we heard Freedom’s Highway. Mavis and her group looked and sounded good. I will Take You There was outstanding with outstanding audience involvement – still so good 40 decades later.3:30 West Stage – Portugal, the Man, a high energy piece (2 guitar drums bass, keyboard) from Oregon and Alaska, started it up a level with some high energy psychedelic rock and roll. I found them to be more high energy than psychedelic and found them to be fun to be controlled by and an easy task to follow for being unsure of some of their music.4:30 East Stage- The Avett Brothers arrived to enthusiastic applause and gave it all right back with an energy Tin Man. John Difliglia (sp) was standing in on bass and a drummer was added by them for some tunes. Soon they were into Shame, And it Spread, Paranoia, January Wedding, an a duet on “Down to the River to Pray.”and an enchanting Headful of Doubt. Heart Like a Kick Drum, Go to I and Sleep and Love and You ended the collection making the crowd to play the final point – love and I and You. The group demanded an from the Avett Brothers who replied;”We may have a couple of more in us.” The encore began with a from Simon Felice of the Felice Brothers on Dylan’s “Just Such As For Instance A Woman.” The Avett’s owned Wednesday – until Mule got out.5:45 West Phase – Northern Mississippi Allstars Couple. No Chew, just Cody and Luther who’ve been opening for Robert Plant’s Band of Joy. The Dickinson siblings went directly into Shake em’ on Down, Poor Black Maddie and Skinny Women. They both sounded wonderful, Luther had his cigar box slide and Cody also had his guitar and washboard time. The Dickinson siblings also performed Shake What Your Mama Offered You, Jelly Rollin Over heaven, Goin’ Down South and Mean ol’ Wind Died Down. Good mix of previous and new.6:45 East Stage – Michael Franti and Spearhead. George Carlin’s brother presented the band and everybody was immediately moving together singing “Everyone deserves Music Sweet Music” and that’s how a set went – a higher energy open exchange between band and audience.9:00 East Stage – Government Mule. Completely Wonderful! This may be the only time they’ll be playing as Mule this summer and they managed to get count.Highlights included the Who’s Will not Get Fooled Again and Black Sabbath’s “War Pigs.” The 2nd set started with Pink Floyd’s Money and Have A Cigar. Hook Carrera, Cody and Luther Dickinson, and Ralph Holloway joined the rest of the group for an extended interpretation of 32-20 Blues, David Lennon’s Performing Course Hero, Who Do You Like, Whole Lotta Love, Norwegian Wood Jam and Thank You Fa Lettin’ Me Be Rodents Elf…again. WOW!Sunday12:00 West Stage – Wiyos, a 5 part with great harmonies great caps, nice lap material, harmonics, stand up bass and harmonica – off we go.12:45 East Stage – Civil Twilight, a group from South Africa is nice three-piece who shows a solid U2 influence.1:30 West Stage – Dawes comes off just as clear and approachable as their CD. Wonderful instrumentation and clean sound. These people are just planning to improve and better.2:30 East Stage – Who would like to perform a song now? The Bohemian 9 piece Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeroes began with a fantastic “new song” offering the lead words of Jade with harmonies by the rest of the group. They often seemed a little unorganized but the group presents great harmonies and great benefits from every one of the nine people. Is it just me or are they just much too happy. Look the hand-painted upright piano!4:00 West Stage Preservation Jazz Hall group – missed them – my apologies. I have seen various incarnations of the Preservation Jazz Hall Band and I have love all of them. They offered an excellent musical mixture to the afternoon.5:15 East Stage – Grace Potter, in a super short gown and super high heel pumps with her 5 part group whipped the audience up quick madness. The highlight of the set was Warren Haynes sitting in for a song. My favorite was the woman privately signing (no maybe not singing – signing – for the deaf) and dancing to the crowd.7:30 East Stage – My Morning Jacket closing the present as only they can.Beautiful Week-end.
